"I started working with Martha almost a year before my first race and she had me ultra prepared to start my triathlon career.

From nutrition to recovery to super fast transition. Martha covered all the bases and tailored everything to my lifestyle and ability.

Martha's programs are not cookie cutter programs for the masses; she really takes care of her athletes"!

USAT Certified Coach

“Thanks, always for all that you have done for me! I feel great, look fantastic (at least I think so) and am challenged everyday by my workouts. That definitely helps to make me feel so very alive!”

Jeff

“The reason I was able to have such a great day racing today (a desperately needed great day) is because my body knew exactly what to do. I have been incredibly well trained and knew exactly how to have a successful race without a single glitch (except maybe when I dove too soon while running into the water and got a face full of sand… but that was just exuberance). From fueling, hydrating, warming up, transitioning and knowing when to just “let it rip” - my body has been taught by the absolute best exactly what to do. I did not need to think about anything in order to have a perfectly executed race. The only thought that crossed my mind the whole race was, "I'm strong and I got this!” For that I can not thank you enough!! You rock!”

"Martha helped me achieve and surpass my goals for RAAM (Race Across America). When I first contacted her, I was a novice triathlete with little cycling experience. Over the course of 7 months, she turned me into a cyclist. She managed to design a workout schedule that fit in with my busy work schedule, hour long work commute, family time and ski weekends all winter. Her plans are not only practical but very effective. Even though biking was the primary focus, Martha mixed in numerous strength and cross-training routines to keep me balanced physically and mentally. She kept me healthy and got me in peak form at the right time to help my RAAM team place first amongst all finishing 4 person teams that raced from California to Maryland!"

"I got involved in training for triathlon in late 2007 with my first event in 2008. I’ve always been physically active but had never truly committed to any type of endurance sport. I did my best to learn how to swim, bike, and run in 2007 but my training plan was an uncoordinated mess, with my biggest problem being the swim. When I was first introduced to Martha she agreed to help me with swim technique. We threw away my nose plugs and got to work. I immediately felt improvement through proper instruction, feedback, support, and motivation from Martha. I successfully completed my first triathlon in 2008 and was bitten by the triathlon bug.

My head was spinning with all of the races I wanted to do in 2009, but I knew I needed to focus on my training. Martha to the rescue! We have worked together on all aspects including the physiological challenges I faced, development of specific training plans, open water swim technique, running form with video analysis, and race day strategy. She was able work around my life schedule, always being flexible and available to help.

There is no challenge too big for Martha. With her help I grew from struggling through a Sprint distance race to finishing my first Olympic distance races feeling strong. I recommend Martha to anyone, from the beginner athlete wanting to try multi-sport racing, to the elite athlete who can’t seem to break through their latest plateau. You will find that Martha has immense knowledge and experience and she uses 100% of it to help you meet your goals."

"I first started training with Martha about a year ago, after I narrowly missed qualifying for the Boston Marathon on a hot day in Hartford. I was fairly confident that I could run a faster race that same season, but had never run two marathons that close together and
wanted to make sure that I didn’t hurt myself in the process. Martha got me through the training in one piece, gave me a successful Boston-qualifying strategy for the Philadelphia Marathon, and then the REAL fun began!

One of Martha’s many gifts as a coach is that she knows exactly how hard to push me, and when to back off in my training. Because she knows what my body is capable of doing at any given point, I trust her completely. Before working with her, I would often get stuck
mentally in my races, and now I race with much greater confidence, knowing that my training and Martha’s race strategy have prepared me well. Not only have my race times at all distances improved over the last year, I also feel more rested and healthier as an athlete
because Martha has helped me focus on quality, not quantity, in my training. This has been especially important for me as a working mother with two small children. Martha is incredibly positive and motivating, and her enthusiasm is infectious. I always leave my
coaching sessions feeling ready for the next challenge, and excited to take it on".

A year and a half ago I never dreamed that I would do an IRONMAN. I watched a few on television and thought people were nuts to put their body through that event.

I did my first sprint triathlon in 2007 and realized that I couldn’t swim. I swam the season with my head out of the water and struggled. I thought a lot over the winter and decided it was time to do something if I wanted to be somewhat competitive. I have a background in mountain bike racing and entered a few running races for fun. A friend referred me to Martha to coach me for triathlons and I thought it was a great idea.

The 2008 season had approached and found myself moving up the ladder in placement. Things were coming together. I decided to sign up for a 2009 Ironman (the Vineman in California)! The day after I signed up, I told Martha, and she said; “We need to get working on this!” I was really nervous during the morning of the Ironman and wondered how I was going to make through such an event! Turns out, I felt UNBELIEVABLE through the entire thing and ended up finishing 3rd in my age group division!

I can’t thank Martha enough for all she has done as well as her encouragement in getting me to the finish line of an Ironman. She is a hero in the sport and knows what it takes to perform well. She also knows how to treat and coach each athlete individually. My experience has been very positive. She is WONDERFUL! She brings so much enthusiasm to the sport, is patient with her “students,” and, is willing to give you 110% (you must be willing to give her the same). She was also flexible with changing schedules at the last minute when I had to work around the clock. She is always there when you need her.

Can’t wait to sign up for the next one, knowing she will be right there with me!"

"I first got into triathlon as a way to lose weight back in 2006. I did a sprint and an XTERRA race that summer. After training and “competing” in those two events, I was hooked and about 50 pounds lighter. Fast forward to 2008 to when I first met Martha. Although I hadn’t yet asked her to be my coach but Martha immediately made an impact on my 2008 race season by the advice she handed out at the local Triathlon Club track workouts as well as weekly Saturday group bike rides. I competed in four races that season and had fairly good success. I did well enough that I was ready to take on my next challenge which was the 70.3 distance. I knew that I couldn’t go at it alone, so in December 2008, I reached out and got some professional help. Coach Martha was AWESOME to work with. She was incredibly flexible with regard to my crazy work schedule and always made time for me. The program that she drew up for me capitalized on my strengths and helped me improve in other areas. Not only did Martha do an amazing job with preparing me physically for the 70.3 distance, Martha made certain that I was prepared emotionally. She was there for me every step of the way".

"Martha designed a great training program with my fitness goals in mind. She was readily available for questions or concerns, and met with me periodically to review strength routines. I really appreciated the guidance and valuable feedback she provided. Most of all, it was lots of fun working with a coach who has such extensive knowledge and plenty of enthusiasm!"

I’ve been a competitive runner for about six years. I took the initiative and modified a beginner marathon schedule which landed me across the finish line of my first marathon in 2006, etching a 4hr 13min race into my running repertoire.  I was exceptionally pleased with my accomplishment at that time, but soon after I began to think about what I needed to do in order to achieve a better time. I read more and trained exhaustively (goal: 4hr marathon) whereby the net overall effect was a mere 1 minute improvement to my time in 2007.  This was disheartening.  Worse yet, my performance began to deteriorate in 2008 and my times worsened instead of improved for the next 2 marathons.  In addition, at the end of every endurance race, I fell ill for no apparent reason.  Despite experimental attempts to remedy this problem on my own, the information I gathered from researching and applying new techniques and practices to my existing training regime was simply not working.

Martha was recommended to me by my sister, Linda, who had been training with her for about a year or so.  I had always considered working with a trainer but was stubborn, and felt as though I could figure things out on my own through trial and error.  After our first initial consultation, I was immediately aware of the benefits of Martha’s sound advice simply by way of the questions she was asking as well as the immediate feedback she offered regarding my recent performance(s).  At that point, Martha customized a training schedule that would accommodate my overly-ambitious life-style and also helped me focus on nutritional supplements as well as the importance of proper hydration.  As a result, Martha helped me re-frame my running mantra from ‘less is best’ to ‘train smarter’ …. and … of course, ‘with a purpose’.  Martha and I worked on a customized program which would offer me the balance I needed in order to both recover from The Hartford Marathon (October '08) yet properly prepare for The Philadelphia Marathon in six weeks time. My results after running Philly were exactly as anticipated.  I was back on track, finishing in 4hrs 15 min, despite the cold temps.    It was, indeed, a delicate balance and I followed Martha’s expert advice in order to accomplish this goal.

Even more remarkably, I completed the 2009 VT Marathon this past weekend and accomplished a PR at 3hrs 57min.  Martha laid the groundwork of my training program from the start, month by month, adjusting as needed for unforeseen travel, work commitments or family obligations.  She remained supportive and optimistic throughout the entire process and for that I am truly grateful.  Martha, you are indeed an exceptional human being – inspirational in spirit, rich in wisdom of your craft – a genuine role model.

I’m delighted to consider that with your unwavering guidance, Boston just may be in my future!

"I can't believe what a great day I had today, I even came out with the division [triathlon] win!! I can't thank you enough for all you've done to help me get here. I've set my bar awfully high but I think I've got more to give, I am looking forward to the next race"!

"Running the Boston Marathon has always been a goal of mine. When I was notified that I had gotten a number to run the race I immediately contacted Martha. I never would have survived the 26.2 miles without her. She planned out my entire workouts for four months. I followed her plan to a tee and it paid off. Working with Martha was easy, she is so knowledgeable, and she was happy to share her knowledge and experiences to help me become a better runner. She is an amazing coach who really knows her stuff. As the race got closer and I got more nervous Martha was very calming and supportive. Leading up to the race I ate and drank everything Martha told me to, and I could not believe how great I felt running my first marathon. Martha really cares about the athletes she works with, and I could feel her cheering me on from Hopkinton to Boston".

"Thanks so much for helping [train for the More 1/2 Marathon]! I absolutely could not have done it without you. I was thinking of you in the last mile and dubbed it my Martha mile in your honor. One of the biggest things I have learned over the past 6 months is that I seldom ever do anything for myself. Training is the one thing that I can do for me – and although I knew that prior to training for this race, I think I have now learned that it is also important to take care of myself while doing it. Today’s [hot] conditions really hit that home for me. I’ve had some challenges the last couple of months that have made me think more about training smart rather than training hard and today it was really important to race smart and not hard. You’ve been really instrumental in helping me learn this important lesson, and so again, I thank you"!

Barb

"I’ve been running competitively for over 20 years, and I first started working with Martha after I did two sprint triathlons, since I had no idea how to train effectively for biking and swimming. In just a couple months Martha helped me improve my triathlon performance substantially, and her coaching has also led me to my fastest running times of the past 10 years. Even more important, she did this with a training program that has left me feeling stronger and healthier, not beaten down, and one that takes into account the other demands on my time (job and two small children). I was fortunate to have some great running coaches in high school, college and beyond, but I’ve never received the benefits of such an individualized training program that takes into account my specific strengths and weaknesses. Martha has a knack for designing workouts that build my confidence by pushing me farther than I would have thought possible, but she’s always right about what I can do. And she is very smart about designing rest and recovery to help me reap the benefits of those workouts. I’ve never enjoyed training and competing this much!"

Kate

"Before I began working with Martha I had two speeds in my training; high and off. Even though I was successful in my ultra distance cycling events, I was plagued with injuries and Motrin became part of my race fuel. When I committed to the 2008 Race Across America (RAAM) as part of a 4-person mixed team, I knew it was time for some help and Martha was everything I hoped for and so much more. She successfully developed a plan that increased my speed and strength, but above all, on that fit into my always changing schedule. She was so perceptive and diligent about engaging in my daily training summaries. She always stayed one step ahead of me, and don't think you can slide anything by her! I am amazed at the results and peaked at just the right time for RAAM. I felt strong and fast the whole way throughout the 7-days. In addition, I took 1 hour off of my time in the Nightmaretour course (180 miles of hills) - and most importantly , injury free.

Martha is genuine, constantly engaged, amazing and above all ... committed to your success!"

"I like challenges, so when I decided to take on the Ironman as my first triathlon, (with two children, a husband and a full time job) I knew I needed a strong support system in place that included a top notch coach. As someone who was always active, yet not proficient in swimming, biking or running, I knew I had my work cut out for me, and so did Martha. With Martha’s one on one coaching, I went from someone who’s first goal was to swim 800 yards, to the starting line of Ironman Lake Placid in 10 months. With incredible patience, planning and re-planning (since her plans are not a cookie cutter model), Martha helped make the journey an unbelievable one. With a few planned smaller triathlons along the way, her amazing clinics, and a big emphasis on nutrition, I ultimately had one of the most incredible days of my life. I swam, biked and ran feeling strong and confident, smiling the entire time. Through her guidance, supp ort, encouragement and nudging for just a little bit more, I am heading there again next year".

Angie

"I just wanted to let you know that I did my first tri this past weekend and it was super fun! I got third in my age group! Thanks so much for all of your help and encouraging me to do tri’s! The training and experience has been so fun and I feel much more balanced (mentally and physically) than when I was just running. Triathlons are the kind of skill/interest that will be rewarding and important through my whole life".

Kathryn

"I contacted Martha after I had already signed up for 2 sprint triathlons. I realized they were something I wanted to do but had no idea how to train for them. I had never done one before. I had not ridden a bike in years, I’d never run 3 miles before and swimming a half mile seemed impossible. Martha met with me in person. She inquired about my abilities and goals and then developed a personal training plan based on those abilities and my real life demands. I followed the daily plan and also attended several of her clinics for 1st time triathletes. Twelve weeks later, I completed my 1st race with a smile on my face and a time better than expected. I am now hooked on the sport thanks to Martha’s coaching and I am looking forward to more races."

Gretchen

"I decided to start training for a sprint triathlon at the young age of 53. Didn’t know how to swim, wasn’t real good at biking, and was out of shape running – all this 6 months before the tri. I had known of Martha since she excelled as a runner in 9th grade and followed her career, off and on, as she progressed to join the top of her athletic class. Out of desperation I emailed her for help – it was the one of the smartest moves I ever made. We met and explained to her my goal of competing in this triathlon and, frankly, was somewhat intimated by her stature as an athlete. Martha immediately removed any anxiety I had and helped me feel comfortable by encouraging my success. She outlined a day by day training program which left me feeling refreshed and stronger with each workout. Martha also took me from barely treading water in the pool to participating in triathlons with open water swimming. She knows when to push the limit and when to back off. I completed that first tri with a smile on my face and a feeling of confidence and strength. I continue to rely on Martha for help in training and form. She has inspired me with her confidence in my athletic ability to continue competing in swimming, biking, and running. The best decision I ever made for my own health was to contact Martha for help".

"I set a goal ro run a half marathon having never "run" a race before in my life. I knew immediately that I needed Martha's help in achieving what seemed like an insurmountable goal.  Martha's individually designed workout plans were challenging, creative and empowering.  Every month I was amazed at my progress.  Through her knowledge and expertise, Martha taught me how to incorporate strength training and proper sports nutrition into my routine (both of which were crucial to my success).  Martha truly embraces her motto of "training with passion and purpose" and can pull the athlete out of anyone!  Thanks!"

Jeanine

"Thanks for the great tri clinic for newbies, the extensive coverage of so many topics, the patient answering of miscellaneous questions, the entertaining props and engaging stories from your own experience...I came away feeling inspired, motivated and engaged. I looked around the room and felt part of a group- no longer alone or lonely in my trianing but , even when out for a solo session, can put faces and names to those I can now envision on this path next to me."

Audrey

"I began with Martha as a swim coach to help prepare me for my first mini-triathlon and I've been hooked ever since.  Training with Martha is a highlight of my week.  She tailors each session to make the most of every minute, constantly amazing me with her knowledge and her ability to adapt every work-out to my particular strengths and weaknesses on any given day.  She pushes me to where I want to go, and as a result I am stronger and faster than I've ever been.  It feels great!"

Pamela

"Martha was an excellent motivator and coach. Her customized training schedule made training for my first marathon very manageable. Martha would consistently check up on me and offer suggestions to alter my schedule if I was having a rough week. With Martha's help, my first marathon was a great experience and I hope to work with her again when I train for my next one"!

Elizabeth Grodd, 2007 New York Marathon Finisher

"As someone who is not a competitive athlete, and had never run more than 2 miles until just one year ago, I was unsure whether having a "coach" would be too overwhelming and was worried that someone who had worked with such elite athletes wouldn't be interested in working with someone at "my level". Martha has been wonderful and has not only addressed my fears of not being "good enough" to warrant a coach but has even more importantly helped me realize that I am capable of achieving whatever I set out to do.
I have worked with Martha in the individual training format on swimming, biking, and running. At all times we worked with at my level, slowly progressing to each new phase at my pace. Additionally, having Martha develop a daily training plan for me, with my fitness goals in mind has kept me on track, motivated and engaged in the work. As a coach, Martha has not only helped with motivation, encouragement, and training plans; she has also helped with nutrition, recovery and race preparation. I have found Martha to be helpful and responsive to my multitude of questions and concerns. The scope of her knowledge of fitness, nutrition, sports psychology, general self-care and self-awareness is immeasurable! To anyone at any level, who is interested in learning to challenge oneself to new fitness levels, I would, without hesitation, recommend working with Martha Grinnell."

Liza McArdle

"Working with Martha has been a pivotal step for me in moving towards my triathlon goals. I sought her out to take my training and racing to the next level and she is doing exactly that. Martha has a gift for creating a training structure that fits into my life in a way that makes sense and doesn’t overwhelm me. Because of her attention to detail, I’m learning how to read my body’s messages more clearly so that I know when to turn up the heat and when to give myself a break. Martha’s energetic and encouraging approach keeps me motivated, not just to focus on my goals, but to enjoy the process more."

Ness Madeiros

"Before I started working with Martha my training had no rhyme or reason. I had taken up the sport of triathlon a year before and wanted to see what I could do with limited time. Being a 45 yr old mother of two young children and having a full time job meant I had to get the most out of my workouts. Working with Martha was so amazing. She really understood me and how best to maximize my workouts. I felt better, stronger, faster, and less wiped out. In two years I surpassed my goals and went to the Worlds in Hawaii and placed 13th in my age group. I know I couldn't have done that without Martha. She's not just a coach, but someone who really knows me. Martha has a gift and I feel so lucky to have her working with me."

Karen Laverdierre

"When I asked Martha to coach me for my first half ironman triathlon, I expected weekly workout schedules and general feedback on my progress.  Martha gave me a whole lot more.  In addition to very detailed and varied (and fun) swim, bike and run workouts, Martha closely monitored and modified my schedule to blend with family, vacation, aikido, canoeing and work.  She provided technical advice for everything from nutrition to transitions.  Best of all, Martha shared her incredible enthusiasm and positive spirit.  In short, Martha is a great coach and it’s been a privilege to train with her."

Phil  Dowling  (54 year old age grouper)

"As a newbie triathlete, who is totally new to swimming, I hired Martha to help me straighten out my swim technique in preperation for a 1/2 Iron Man. Within literally minutes of meeting me at the pool, Martha had me up in the water, swimming more smoothly with less effort, by giving me a couple of key visualization concepts. I made more progress it those first five minutes with Martha, than I had in a month of "training" on my own. After each subsequent lesson, I found myself knocking minutes off my projected swim time. Martha is both knowledgeable and insightful. She clearly brings the same passion to coaching as she did to her career as a pro athlete. She exceeded my expectations by sending me before and after video, and follow up drill programs. I highly recommend her as a coach and mentor."

Mike Hempstead

"I'm a 66 year old who enjoys riding his bike at an intermediate level. Slow and steady. The goal was to be in good shape to start the riding season in the spring. We achieved it. I'm in better shape at this point than I've ever been. The structured workouts, personal attention, and constant feedback were fun and helpful. I'm stronger. I'm fit. I'm no younger! I'll do it again."

Jeff Caplan, Husband & Father, Loves to ride his bike!

"Martha helped me make sense of my training and gave me a program with purpose. In addition, her approach of quality verses quantity allows you to have a life outside of training and racing. As Martha knows personally what it takes to become the best athlete you can be, one of her special abilities is to tune into her athletes not only on a physical level but also on a mental and emotional level. She knows when to push and when to back off your training. Even if you never meet Martha, not only will you feel that she is fully invested in your training program, your results will reflect it."

Heather Lynn Haviland, 2004 USAT Amateur Triathlete of the Year, 2005 3rd place IM Wisconsin

"I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Martha since 2000. Martha embodies both the passion for and the knowledge of multisport coaching. As a former professional athlete herself, Martha attained the level of competition that she, in turn, bestows upon her clients.  I have directly benefited from Martha’s talent in marathons, duathlons, and long distance triathlons. In 2002, I referred Martha to the all woman 4-person RAAM team and she coached them to victory. What more can I say?"

Valerie Ellsworth Gattis; 1st place 45-49 age group, ITU Long Course Triathlon Worlds in Sater, Sweden, 3:43 marathon (at age 49)

“I started working with Martha almost a year before my first race and she had me ultra prepared to start my triathlon career.  From nutrition to recovery to super fast transition, Martha covered all the bases and tailored everything to my lifestyle and ability. Martha’s programs are not cookie cutter programs for the masses; she really takes care of her athletes!”

Amy Farrell; 5th place overall Lake Placid Ironman, 2002, 2nd place overall, 2001 Eagleman Triathlon

“Internet coaches are a “dime a dozen,” but Martha Grinnell is not.  She understands that there are two critical aspects to training: the physiological as will as the psychological.  Martha has a keen sense of how to keep these two areas balanced in an athlete; She has a genuine concern for you as an athlete and a whole person.  Martha’s programs are not formulaic, but designed with each athlete in mind. She took essentially four aerobically fit women with full-time jobs and families and developed us into a cohesive team of ultra-fit distance cyclists by the end of a 15-week period.”

Nina Norris; Mom, Lawyer, 2001 2nd place RAAM Team finisher, and long distance triathlete

"Martha Grinnell has been my coach for over 7 years. I would recommend her to athletes of all levels who want to reach their potential in endurance sports. Martha gets to know you as a person as well as an athlete. She has a knack for identifying and helping you to improve your weaknesses. She knows how to challenge you when you need to be pushed, and how to back you off when you need rest. Most importantly, Martha understands the mental aspects of endurance racing and is always there with the right advice.”

Lauren Jensen; Four Time top 3 Ironman Pro Finisher, 2003 Pro Duathlete Champion, 2004 Pro National Long Course Champion

"As a novice runner getting ready for a half marathon all the information I found about training was overwhelming. After meeting with Martha to discus my training options and how they could fit into my hectic schedule, there was no stopping my progress. I am looking forward to setting more competition goals and getting them accomplished with Martha and Dynamic Training!"

Alicia; Novice Runner
